CHRIS: Baking at the Bunker

Earlier today I found out that we were going to bake Brötchen which sounded like fun. We rode on the Straßenbahn for a while to a part of town that no one had ever been to. When we got off we walked through this shady area and I wondered where Bo was taking us. We arrived at what I thought initially was a German trailer park. There was this creepy dirty old blue trailer and this large strange building that looked really old.

Bo walked inside to look for someone and I wondered if he'd ever come back. He did come back and we met our host. He showed us the way inside and we went into a big room with tables all around. He told us the history of the place. I think he said that at one time it was a military bunker then later on it was turned into a hospital. The hospital was used to treat patients with sensitive lungs who couldn’t be treated in the city. The property isn’t really in the country but it’s so overgrown with lush green foliage that it made it easier for patients to breathe. It was a hospital for many years until recently. Now it’s used to host events for children and groups like ours.

After the introduction we began preparing the Brötchen. It was neat because we actually put the stuff in the grinder and mixed the yeast and everything.

After we got the bread ready, made salad, and stuff to put on the bread he took us outside to show us around. It was a very pretty place full of flowers and vegetables. This picture is of the biggest zucchini I’ve ever seen. clip_image008

After he showed us everything outside we went back inside and the bread was taken out of the oven. The oven by the way was an ancient looking brick oven.

We ate bread, salad, and drank some very good peppermint tea. I ate way too much!

After dinner we got what I think was strawberry rhubarb cake cobbler thing which was very good. Then a thunderstorm rolled in just as we were about to leave. I have a raincoat but of course it was back at the hostel. We then left and had fun walking back to the Straßenbahn in the rain. It was a fun day.
